Sort, downsize and organize now for a stress-free spring
(Sewickley, PA) – Spring: it’s the season of new beginnings. But it’s hard to appreciate the blooming daffodils, newly budding trees and chirping birds if you’re stuck in the house trying to sift through the accumulation of winter clutter.
Fortunately there are some easy techniques that will help you get a jumpstart on your spring-cleaning. The following steps will help get your house organized and in no time you’ll be enjoying the new season, clutter-free.
“Before you start, make sure you have the proper supplies handy,” suggests Dottie Coll, moving expert and Owner of the 2 Pittsburgh TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations. “Get sturdy cardboard boxes or plastic bins before you start sorting your belongings and avoid using produce boxes from your grocery store — they may contain bugs and larvae. For extra convenience, shop online to get packing supplies delivered to your door. Some companies will ship boxes to your house with no extra charge.”
Moving experts TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® recommend the following tips to get organized this spring:
    • Start by sorting and organizing closets. If you have limited closet space, consider storing winter clothing in the attic, basement or garage. Wardrobe boxes offer excellent space for hanging coats, sweaters and snow pants. Use the basement to store winter boots.
    • Sort out items you no longer use or wear. Remember, if you haven’t worn it in more than a year, you probably won’t wear it again. Set aside a couple of empty boxes for donations or items to sell.
    • Use sturdy boxes with dividers for packing breakables. If you use cardboard boxes, make sure they are structurally sound, with cardboard fluting to provide extra support. Dish-pack boxes with adjustable inserts that form individual cells are a great option. Local moving companies may carry these boxes.
    • Once the closets have been organized, do the same in other storage areas like the attic or garage.
    • Think green. Survey your local recycling options to find the most convenient solution for your recyclables. Many cities and towns offer curbside pick-up or “sort and drop” depots. Visit www.earth911.org for a list of local venues where you can dispose of all types of recyclable materials. Prepare your recyclables by organizing them into respective categories: plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc.
    • Care for hazardous material. Be conscientious about the materials you are disposing. Toxic items such as paint, batteries, house cleaning products, automobile oils, pesticides, and fertilizers are dangerous to transport and should not be thrown away with nontoxic garbage. These items should be taken to specialized depots. See www.earth911.org for the depot closest to you.
    • Concentrate on disinfecting the space. Change air filters, rotate your mattresses and vacuum under your furniture.
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the largest franchised moving company in North America. It includes more than 200 locations and nearly 1,400 trucks on the road. Each location is independently owned and operated and sells boxes and packing supplies. Locations complete both home and business moves as well as packing and unpacking services.

  • OFFICE INTERIOR DESIGN: IS IT TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING?
    Posted on: 2010-04-13
Spring is officially here, with a renewed sense of energy and excitement. We clean our yards, our house but what about our office interior design? Whether we work at home or at an office, it is important to take time to look at our work environment. Is your office space conducive to productivity, creativity and success, or are you dreading to go to work every morning?

Just before my move back to Pittsburgh, I was asked by Gulfshore Business Magazine in Naples, FL to consult with a business manager using Feng Shui for her office interior design. Feng Shui (pronounce fung shway) is the Chinese discipline of using design elements in a way that enhances our life. You can read the article in my blog, and see how we transformed her office from chaos into a productive workspace.

Today, I am going to suggest a few simple steps to improve your office interior design by making changes that will enhance your financial success!

    1) Clutter: First things first. Take a good look at you office and see how many piles of papers are lying around. How many bags filled with flyers, brochures and business cards collected at trade shows are in a corner? These piles become so distracting that they prevent you from focusing on the task at hand. They are a reminder that you are behind and will never catch up. Scary! Do yourself a favor and spend 10 minutes a day, throwing away, organizing folders, going through your mail, and throwing away again. Did I mention throwing away?? Get rid of broken objects, or anything that has a negative connotation.

    2) Desk location: The best position for your desk is facing the door but sideways. You are then in the command position. If you cannot change your desk location, and it faces a wall with your back to the door, place a mirror on the wall so that you can see who is coming.

    3) Artwork: What type of artwork is part of your office interior design? The office is where you are generating your income. You want to surround yourself with beautiful objects, and artwork that represents financial abundance to you. You can also pick one piece that represents your long term goal (retiring on a sailboat? golfing? traveling?). Your office is the place to display awards and diplomas. Frame all of these the same to create cohesion. Lastly, a couple of family pictures are great to remind us why we work so hard. Always use good quality framing, and quality objects that bring a sense of financial success. I’ve had great success using Mark at the Sewickley Gallery & Frame Shop: www.SewickleyGallery.com

    4) Lighting: Use adequate lighting to inspire you to work. Your office is your money center, give it life! If possible avoid fluorescent lights or upgrade your fluorescent tubes to “daylight” quality. Add accent lamps or table lamps for effect, again use color corrected “daylight” quality bulbs.

    5) Fresh plant: I used to call myself a plant killer, until I realized the importance of tending to my garden. Having a live plant (some are low daylight tolerant) not only brings positive energy, but forces us to stop and pay attention. It is very rewarding to see your plant grow, like your business.

These few office interior design tips should put you on the road to enhanced success! You want to feel good and successful in your office. And remember: “Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become!” (Jim Rohn)
